Christ the King Lutheran Church is a congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and a member of the Southeast Minnesota Synod of the ELCA.

The church building was constructed over several decades, beginning with the area that is now the Chapel, built in 1959-60. The next expansion, in 1964, was the construction of the education wing (now classrooms 16-22, which contain Cobblestone Corner, King's Productions, Bible Land, and the youth area.

In 1969, the present worship space was built, along with the west façade of the building. A major construction period in 1994-95 resulted in the replacement of the west façade by the Community Room, a large space that can seat, mess-hall style, up to 600 people, or about 250 if you want a little walking-around room.

The rest of the west part of the building was extensively remodeled. The library grew from its original space (now the reference area and Library Office) into the original Fireside Room. A new Fireside Room was constructed between the Commmunity Room and the worship space, with a larger narthex (lobby) included as well; the main doors were also moved to the northwest and a large canopy, which serves as a carport/drop-off area, was built as well.

On the east side of the building, a new office wing, music room, and nursery were constructed, and three large classroom spaces and a conference room were built. The courtyard area, which had been open to the east, was fully enclosed.

During this construction, all of the roof, and all new walls were built according to energy-saving codes; all light fixtures in the classroom/office/hallway areas were replaced or refitted with the most energy-efficient fluorescent lamps available. In the entire building there are less than 80 light fixtures, mostly special purpose, that still use incandescent bulbs. The remaining incandescents are being replaced with more energy-conserving lighting whenever possible.

More recent alterations to the building include the remodeling of a storage room into the Prayer Chapel, a small but cozy room; the addition of kingdom.com, a computer lab space for Sunday School, the installation of the pipe organ and contemporary music area, and some smaller changes to help accomodate the Sunday School program.

The structure encloses about 43,000 square feet of space, with air conditioning available in all rooms. There are two parking lots, with a total capacity of about 200 cars.

In 2008, the church's address was changed from 207 McConnell to 222 Pfau St. to help people find the building, as McConnell St. is only two blocks long and Pfau St. connects with Main St. and Madison Avenue. Pfau Street is pronounced as "fowl" without the final letter L, although one guess at the pronunciation was 'Pfooey Street.'

There are ash, maple, and evergreen trees planted on the property, along with a locust tree in the courtyard. Work continues on a long-range landscape plan.
